Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I’m definitely feeling fat and happy. I ate a LOT.
Say, you know what goes great with a plate of leftovers?
COMICS!
Specifically,
TRANSFORMERS COMICS!
The first couple of issues of Skybound’s Transformers series are out, and I wanna talk about them!
TO PREFACE,
This is my first interaction with the Transformers. Like, ever. I’ve never seen a movie, read a book, watched an episode… nothing. That being said, this series was QUICK to make a fan out of me.
Let’s start off with…
MY FAVORITE PAGE!
This is the page that won me over. I love the archetype of the gentle giant (often robotic) character who, despite all his power, has a soft spot for nature.
Maybe it’s because the two often oppose each other, and it’s refreshing to see them harmonize. Maybe it’s because the giant has the potential to level the entire forest, but chooses not to out of love (a Superman type beat). Maybe it’s both!
Optimus Prime reminds me of the Iron Giant, from my favorite animated movie of the same name. Another big bot with a big heart.
It’s also worth mentioning Bastion from Overwatch—another shining example.
Basically, I love sweet robots. :)
AND NOW, FOR MY REVIEW…
In short: I recommend!
In long: Transformers is off to a great start. After being awoken on a distant planet (see Void Rivals #1), Jetfire flies to Earth and wakes up the rest of the Transformers, kicking off a classic Autobots vs Decepticons storyline with the fate of the world in the balance. Daniel Warren Johnson is a solid writer, a stunning artist, and the perfect guy for this job. While the average comic page has six panels, he’s able to squeeze in ten or more without it feeling overly crowded. It’s great for breaking down the subtleties of an action.
With only two issues out, now is the PRIME time to hop in on this series! *wink*
If you read this, and you like it, consider checking out the other titles in the ENERGON UNIVERSE—a new shared comic book universe containing Void Rivals, G.I. Joe, and Transformers!

THAT’S ALL FOR NOW!
Happy reading, dudes! Colored SURGE pages next week!
