I GOTTA TALK ABOUT THIS!
Five issues of Skybound’s new Void Rivals series have been released so far. I’ve read them all, and I’m in love.
It’s time for a review!
FIRST, SOME CONTEXT:
He’s an Agorrian. She’s a Zertonian. Their worlds are at war with each other.
Our two heroes, Darak and Solila, crash land on the same desolate planet. If they want to make it off, they’ll have to work together, combine the wreckage of their ships, and build a new one. Will they be able to overcome their differences and collaborate to save their lives?
Yes!
Apologies for the minor spoiler, haha. They fly away pretty early, actually. They’re long gone before the end of issue two. Along the way, they realize that maybe Agorrians and Zertonians aren’t so different after all…
Speed is one of the things I love about this series. It moves fast. But a good fast. It doesn’t feel rushed—it just keeps things interesting!
WHICH LEADS ME TO MY REVIEW…
Like I said before, the pacing here is wonderful. In every issue, the problem from the previous one is solved, and we end with a new problem. It’s a great formula that repeatedly hooks the reader and keeps them coming back. All the while, we slowly unlock new information about the BIG problem—Agorra versus Zertonia.
I absolutely recommend this series. Robert Kirkman is a phenomenal writer, as he’s proven with his work on Invincible and The Walking Dead. And Lorenzo de Felici’s art is just beautiful, especially the way he illustrates space!
Calling Void Rivals “Shakespeare in space” is a little reductive. While I am sensing a romantic connection between our two heroes, the series is so much deeper than that. It’s a space opera about this large-scale conflict between two technologically advanced civilizations where the fate of their worlds lies in the balance.
AND THERE’S TRANSFORMERS!?
YEAH!
In Void Rivals #1, Darak and Solina come across Jetfire, who has been taking a loooong nap on this planet. After he wakes, he immediately flies off in search of his Autobot friends, and that’s where Transformers #1 picks up!
WAIT, SO THAT MEANS…
That’s right! Void Rivals and Transformers (AND G.I. Joe) now exist together in a new shared universe! The
WHOA.
“Whoa” is right!
Kirkman is heading up this new project with a team of ultra-talented creators alongside him. I think this could be the beginning of something BIG in the world of comics.
If you’re interested, I’d say that now is the perfect time to hop in. At the time of this post, only seven issues in the Energon Universe have been released (five Void Rivals, two Transformers). This thing is FRESH!
I’ll be keeping up with all of this as it unfolds, so subscribe to stay updated! *wink*
UNTIL NEXT TIME…
THANKS FOR READING, AND HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!
Love ya!
